Abba Father?

I borrowed this from Ernie Fitzpatrick over at:  http://www.lrchouston.com/

Torturing people without end, with no redemptive purpose in mind- out right cruelty without end, is the picture of God that Jesus painted? This is Abba Father? Explain it to me please. Justice you say? How is eternal, infinite hell a just recompense for finite temporal sins? Explain that too.

Hans Kung (1928 – is a Catholic priest, an eminent Swiss theologian, and a prolific author and he remains a Catholic priest in good standing, though the Vatican has rescinded his authority to teach Catholic theology) asked the question this way, “What would we think of a human being who satisfied his thirst for revenge, as the church depicts God does, with an eternal hell”?

There’s simply no rational way to answer that!

Explain to me how this shows the moral goodness of God. Sure we have free will, and who gave us that? And that which God gave us, He’s now going to nail us with an eternal hell, knowing full well, in advance (omniscience) what decisions we’d make? Is this in any way rational? God sees this as love? This is just? Is there any sanity at all to such a doctrine?

God is love, and hell is the price for not knowing that? Me thinks literalists speak with forked-tongue! :-(

Thanks Ernie. Also check out :  God is Love, Hell is Not

Hey Don! Smart catholic priest that dude. I’m surprised he wanted to stay a priest, but tradition dies hard. Saying that, I would’nt mind having a priest like that! For me, it is so easy to see that God is not the way He has been portrayed to me. I don’t know why others don’t see, but each in his own time I suppose. I thank you for being an encouragement to me, it is a lonely walk for sure. May you and yours be blessed…
    Shalom, Nancy

Y’know what’s amazing. Even a child can figure out how utterly unfair, unloving and absurd eternal torture is. Yet, we beat it into them twisting logic around to the breaking point telling them that the G-d who sends us to Hell really loves and really doesn’t want to do it.

Trying to make this mental construct work nearly cost me my sanity. I just knew so many people I loved and respected couldn’t be wrong. But, why couldn’t I see what they saw?

It’s so freeing to let go of trying to make this logic work. It just doesn’t.

    Peace,
    Brian

Nancy-I’ll keep you in my intentions and prayers.

Brian-I realize I have posted twice recently on this subject, but like you, I believe it is a issue that needs exposure to the light of truth and sound thinking. Rev. Wright will be speaking at a Dallas church on Sunday. I will watch with interest to see how the media covers his visit. Thanks as usual for your insightful comments.

I don’t know you Brian, but at any rate, my experience is similiar, literally.
